World Glaucoma Week
“World Glaucoma Week” was observed by the department of ophthalmology from March 12th – 17th, 2018. The department used this opportunity to conduct various programmes to spread awareness regarding glaucoma.
One such activity was a screening programme initiated on 14th March 2018 under the theme BIG (Beat invisible glaucoma). Over the course of the week, there was an overwhelming patient response with more than 150 patients being screened free of cost for glaucoma. Screening included visual acuity, measuring intraocular pressure, field tests, slit lamp biomicroscopy examination and gonioscopy. 15 patients were found to have primary open angle glaucoma, appropriate treatment and follow up advice was given to each patient. One patient had primary closed angle glaucoma and was treated with laser iridotomy; follow up advice was given. Thus, the programme achieved its objective of detecting and preventing invisible blindness in the local population.
