Update on Mycobacterium Tuberculosis with Special
Reference to NTM
A guest lecture “ Update on Mycobacterium tuberculosis with special reference to NTM” was organized by Department of Microbiology, AIMS, B G Nagara on 29-05-2018 from 10.30 am to 12.30 pm. Dr.D.R. Gayathri Devi, Professor of Microbiology, M S Ramaiah Medical College, Bangalore was the guest speaker. The function was attended by nearly 150 participants including MBBS students and teaching staff of Pre and Para clinical departments.
Dr. M G Shivaramu, Principal, AIMS, B.G.Nagara and Dean, faculty of Health Sciences (Medical), Adichunchanagiri University felicitated Dr. D. R. Gayathri Devi and presided over the function.
The speaker explained the scenario of tuberculosis in India, different methods of laboratory diagnosis of tuberculosis both conventional (microscopy- ZN smear, fluorescent and culture) and recent methods. She explained Gene Expert (CBNAAT), Line probe assay, importance of MGIT over BACTEC system and other methods in detail. The speaker spoke on revised guide lines of RNTCP and stressed up on the latest treatment strategies. She highlighted about isolation of Non tuberculous Mycobacteria (NTM) in clinical case scenario and treatment aspect. All NTM isolates were identified and characterized at National Tuberculosis Institute (NTI), Bangalore.
